In the Language of Flowers, purple lilac blossoms represent the first emotions of new love and the white lilac is emblematic of youthful innocence. Lilacs owe their botanical name to the beautiful Greek nymph Syringa who turned herself into a fragrant bush in order to escape the unwanted advances of Pan, the god of the forest and the fields. In Russian folklore, the lilac bush is believed to bring wisdom to newborn babies.
